UPPCL Net Metering Guidelines & Regulations (2026)
Net metering is the mechanism that allows grid-tied solar systems in Uttar Pradesh to offset utility bills. UPPCL regulates net metering operations in compliance with the UPERC (Uttar Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission) codes.
Under UPPCL, residential consumers get a 1-to-1 credit offset. Every solar unit exported to the grid offsets one unit of imported electricity. You are billed only for the net energy imports (Imports minus Exports) at your standard slab rate.
Capacity and Sanctioned Load Limits
UPPCL imposes strict connection limits to maintain grid stability:
- Sanctioned Load Cap: The maximum rooftop solar capacity allowed under net metering is capped at **100% of your sanctioned load** (as indicated on your bills). If your sanctioned load is 2 kW, your solar system capacity is capped at 2 kW. You must submit a load enhancement application to install a larger system.
- Transformer Capacity Limit: Cumulative solar capacity in a neighborhood cannot exceed **80% of the local distribution transformer capacity**. Feasibility requests are reviewed in the order received, so applying early is recommended.
The Annual Settlement Cycle (September 30th)
If your solar system generates more units than you consume in a month, the excess units are carried forward to the next billing cycle.
In Uttar Pradesh, the settlement period runs from **October 1st to September 30th** of the following year. At the end of this cycle (September 30th), if you still have surplus energy credits in your ledger, UPPCL pays you for those units at a pre-set feed-in tariff (typically **₹2.50 to ₹3.00 per unit**), resetting your credit ledger to zero.
